CD Review's
This
San Diego, USA based guitarist/songwriter has recorded an excellent and
diverse collection of 11 blues original songs. Sleepy Eddie serves up some
of the finest styles of blues from Chicago, Texas, West Coast swing, Funk,
Blues/Rock and Jazz tinged Slow Blues. The songwriting is a witty,
insightful and funny look into California life. His vocals range from
soulful and sweet to howling and raspy depending on the mood. Sleepy Eddie
is helped on tracks by sax legend Jonny Viau (USA) and harmonica player
Riche "Blue" Evans (USA). www.sleepyeddie.com
Sleepy Eddie and his California Kings are, as their name suggests, from California, more specifically from San Diego. For the most part “Frisky from the Whisky” deals with drinking and women. An example: “I’ll take a shot of Jimmy Beam, she takes six-course meals at the Che le Fond. Five empty bottles of Dom Perignon. When her cash is nearly gone, it’s a champagne brunch, Filet Mignon”. Instrumental “Bitte ein Bit” (what’s in a name), where the run shadows Dave Brubecks “Take Five”, after a minute flows into the Steve Ray tainted “Mind of a woman”. But what we get in this CD is mainly West Coast Blues. He is surrounded by some excellent musicians, from which saxophone player Johnny Viau is the most well known (see Kid Ramos, Candye Kane, Rod Piazza…). Jump blues with some drops of swing, rock and what in USA is popularly know as 'American Roots Music' performed by singer and guitar player Sleepy Eddie James. He is a veteran of San Diego Californian scene and in this CD he gives us a bright powerful performing with a good dose of joyful dancing music. To get the special swingin' atmosphere along the eleven songs included on the CD, tenor sax Jonny Viau's inspired performing becomes really important. Sleepy is a very good musician and the whole band gives him the precise backing to reach a compact powerful sound together with an original personal style they can feel proud and satisfied. VERY GOOD. en espanol
